SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball fell to Utah Valley in a midweek game by a final of 12-4 in six innings. The Broncos are now 5-23 on the season while the Wolverines are now 12-23.
Santa Clara returns to the field tomorrow, Fri., April 11 at 6 p.m. at BYU.
Briana Rios (1-5) started for Santa Clara and picked up a no-decision. Rios faced three batters without recording an out. Jessica Turner (2-9) got the loss in 0.1 innings out of the bullpen. Geenamarie Bonilla was 1-3 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored to lead the offense. Stephanie Fisher was 3-3 with a run scored and a RBI while Kelly Scribner picked up a RBI.
Karen Christensen (2-3) started for Utah Valley and picked up a win in a 6.0 inning complete game. Christensen allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Brittney Vansway was 3-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored to lead the offense. Morgan Summers was 3-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and a RBI while Debra Lovell was 1-2 with a home run, a walk and two runs scored.
The first two Broncos walked on four pitches and Fisher singled to center to give Santa Clara the quick 1-0 lead. Bonilla followed with a triple to right field and came in to score on an error.
Down 4-0, Utah Valley scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Dynasty Lauvai led off the inning with a walk and Summers tripled down the right field line. Brianna Gatlin was hit by a pitch and Vansway follow with a RBI single. Jessica Turner came in to pitch and loaded the bases on an error and a walk. Kelli Fox walked to bring in a run and Amanda Robinson tied the game with a single to center. After Turner walked Erin Romero, Ciara Gonzales came in and got a ground out but the sixth run of the inning came in to make it a 6-4 Wolverine lead.
Lovell homered with two out in the bottom of the third and a two-out double by Hailey Kofler in the bottom of the fourth put Utah Valley on top 8-4. After a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, Vansway hit a walk-off two-run home run.
