Softball Drops Road Contest to Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Taking a quick trip up the coast, Santa Clara softball fell at Stanford by a final of 8-0 in five innings. The Broncos are now 7-27 on the season while the Cardinal are now 27-18.

Santa Clara returns to the field Sat., April 26 for a doubleheader with Saint Mary's at the Softball Field.

Ciara Gonzales (4-12) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 4.1 innings. Gonzales allowed eight runs, four earned, on 13 hits with two walks and a strikeout. Stephanie Fisher, Breezy Bernard, and Jenna Krummen each had a hit for Santa Clara while Geenamarie Bonilla drew a walk.

Madi Schreyer (19-10) started for Stanford and picked up a win in 5.0 innings. Schreyer allowed three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Leah White was 3-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the offense. Cassandra Roulund was 2-3 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored while Tylyn Wells was 2-2 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI.

Bernard led off the top of the second with a walk and was pinch-run for by Amanda Delfino. Bonilla followed with a walk and a double steal put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Three straight popups got Stanford out of the inning without a run coming across.

Cassandra Roulund doubled to start the bottom of the second and after one was out Hanna Winter was hit by a pitch. A ground out moved the runners up and a walk loaded the bases. White singled up the middle to knock in two runs and put the Cardinal on top. Another run came across on an error by the second baseman before the inning ended.

Krummen singled to start things for Santa Clara in the top of the fifth. Ashley Haney laid down a sacrifice bunt but an error put runners on the corners. Cassandra Padilla hit into a double play and Rochelle Rivera struck out swinging to end the inning with the score still 3-0.

Kylie Sorenson led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and Ashby followed with a single to third. Roulund knocked in a run with a single up the middle to make it a four run game. After a fielder's choice, Winter singled and a run came in on an error. Winter stole second and Kaitlin Schaberg drew a walk to load the bases. A single and sac fly followed to make it 7-0 before Kayla Bonstrom walked to load the bases again. Sorenson hit an RBI to right to end the game.
