Softball Drops Midweek Road Game to Cal State Fullerton

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball fell to Cal State Fullerton by a final of 12-4 in five innings on Thursday night. The Broncos are now 7-31 on the season while the Titans are now 28-20-1.

Santa Clara returns to the field Sat., May 3 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at LMU.

Ciara Gonzales (4-16) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 1.2 innings. Gonzales allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Breezy Bernard was 2-3 with two RBI to lead the offense. Stephanie Fisher was 1-3 with a two-run homer while Geenamarie Bonilla was 2-3.

Christina Washington (11-5) started for Cal State Fullerton and picked up a win in 4.0 innings. Washington allowed one run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Samantha Galarza was 2-3 with a home run, a double, a run scored, and three RBI to lead the offense. Ariel Tsuchiyama was 2-2 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI while Gabby Aragon was 2-3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI.

Tsuchiyama doubled to left center with one down in the bottom of the first and an infield single put runners on the corners. A stolen base put two runners in scoring position and Aragon followed with an RBI single to get the Titans on the board. Galaraza followed with an RBI double for the second run of the inning.

After Cal State Fullerton made the score 6-0 after two innings, Santa Clara got a run back in the top of the third. Cassandra Padilla walked with one out and was moved up to second on a sac bunt. Bernard came through with the two-out RBI single.

The Titans responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth to make it a 12-1 lead headed to the fifth.

In the top of the fifth Padilla tripled to lead off the inning and Bernard knocked her in with an RBI single after an out was recorded. Fisher followed with a two run homer but the next two batters went down swinging to end the game.
