Ashley Haney Discusses Her Senior Season

Dylan Lynch '16

Mid-way through her senior season on the Bronco softball team, Ashley Haney (AH) is focusing on leading by example while still appreciating all of the little moments.  She sat down with Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) to reflect on her past three seasons as a Bronco.

SCU: In the midst of your final season, how is your mindset different now than during previous seasons?

AH: My mindset has definitely changed entering my senior season.  I really want to enjoy my final season playing the sport I love with this team.  My past three years as a Bronco have flown by and I want to appreciate the moments I have with my teammates.  Our senior class has really seen this program progress and it is exciting to see how far we have come.

SCU: Your team is traveling to several tournaments this season; do you have any tournaments/games you're particularly excited for?

AH:  We opened our season in Arizona, which I was really looking forward to.  It's always exciting to travel as a team and start playing games after practicing for so long.  I'm also looking forward to traveling down to San Diego for one of our tournaments, as well as for conference play.

SCU:  What has been your favorite Santa Clara softball moment thus far?

AH:  I have had several memorable moments during my career.  However, I would have to say that our series against LMU my freshman year is one of my favorites.  We were down 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning and came back to take the win 9-7.  It was incredible to see such fight from our team, especially to get a win over the conference favorite that year.

SCU:   Do you feel your position as a leader on the team has increased now that you're a senior?

AH:  Our senior class as a whole has really tried to set the tone for our team this year.  As a senior I have tried to contribute to this through leading by example.  I am extremely proud of my fellow seniors and the change we have helped set in motion for the program.  I can't wait to see how it contributes to our success this season.

SCU:  You've listed motor cross as one of your hobbies, when did that start and do you still ride?

AH:  I started riding when I was about 11 or 12.  My dad has ridden since he was a kid and we picked it up as a family hobby.  I haven't ridden as much since starting softball here at SCU because of the risk of injury.  I do plan to pick it back up again once I'm done playing.
