Softball Holds Off Late Rally by Utah Valley

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – On the final day of the San Diego Classic, Santa Clara softball topped Utah Valley by a final of 3-2. The Broncos are now 8-19 on the season.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., March 20 at 5:30 vs. Manhattan in the Santa Clara Round Robin.

Ciara Gonzales (7-8) started for Santa Clara and picked up a win in the complete game. Gonzales allowed two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Ellie Fisher was 1-3 with a walk and two RBI to lead the offense. Ashley Haney was 2-3 with a run scored while Jordan Newell was 1-2 with a home run.

Bailey Moore (7-9) started for Utah Valley and picked up a loss in 3.2 innings. Moore allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Taleigh Williams was 2-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the offense.

The first two outs were recorded in the top of the fourth with the score 0-0. Newell stepped up and broke the scoreless tie with a home run to center. An error allowed the inning to continue and Haney followed with a single and moved to second on the throw to the plate. Fisher came through with the two RBI single to left to make it a 3-0 lead for Santa Clara.

With one down in the bottom of the seventh an error and a double put two runners in scoring position for Utah Valley. Williams singled up he middle to end the shutout. A sac fly followed for the second out of the inning. With the winning run at the plate, Gonzales got a swinging strike three to end the game.
