Softball Beaten Twice on Day Two of Santa Clara Round Robin

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball fell to Iona, 10-4, and Dartmouth, 11-1, on Saturday, the second day of action in the Santa Clara Round Robin.

The three-day, six-team tournament concludes Sunday with three games.

Game 1
Santa Clara (5-23) fell behind 8-0 after an inning and a half. The big blow was a three-run home run by Kristen Turner in the top of the second.

Katie Newton led the Gaels (5-7) offense with a double, a home run, and four RBIs. Marisa Gergel was 3-4 with a pair of runs scored.

McCall James (2-12) lasted 2 innings in the start for Santa Clara. She allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits while picking up the loss.

The Broncos put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to start chipping away at the lead. Justine Garner started the inning with a single up the middle before Morgan Modesto brought her in with a triple. Kimberly Goulart followed with an RBI groundout.

Casandra Padilla led off with a double in the home half of the third and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Kelsie Barnard to cut the deficit to 8-3.

Padilla led the offense by going 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Justine Garner was 3-4 with a run scored and Kelsie Barnard had a pair of RBIs.

Jessica Harkness (1-2) went 5-plus innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits to pick up the win for Iona.

Game 2
Santa Clara trailed from the start by allowing three runs in the first. Dartmouth (4-8) added two runs in the second and four in the third before scoring two more in the fifth.

The Broncos added a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out single by Amanda Dellfino.

Goulart (0-1) got the start for Santa Clara in the second game and picked up a loss. She allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in an inning-plus.

Delfino and two hits and an RBI while Geenamarie Bonilla had a hit and scored a run.

Morgan McCalmon (4-3) got the win in the complete game for the Big Green. She allowed one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Morgan Martinelli was 3-3 with a double, two runs scored, and four RBIs to lead the offense. Chloe Madill added three RBIs and a double while each of the top four batters in the order scored two runs each for Dartmouth.

Santa Clara returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. CSU Bakersfield in the finale of the Santa Clara Round Robin.
