Softball Falls in Final Road Game of 2016

PROVO, Utah – In its final road game of the season, Santa Clara softball lost to BYU 9-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The first 11 Broncos to come to the plate were set down in order. By the time Santa Clara picked up its first base runner in the top of the fourth, the Cougars were on top 3-0.

McKenna Bull (24-11) was responsible for the Broncos difficulty at the plate and picked up the win in a 5-inning complete game. She allowed one run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

A base hit by Amanda Delfino with two outs in the top of the fourth broke up Bull's perfect game. Chiara Biagini would follow with a walk but the Broncos (8-40, 3-11 WCC) couldn't take advantage.

BYU (33-18, 10-2 WCC) scored single runs in each of the first three innings before exploding for six in the bottom of the fourth.

All nine runs were charged to Micaela Vierra (4-20) but just three were earned. She picked up the loss in 4 innings and allowed eight hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

Santa Clara got its only run in the top of the fifth when Morgan Modesto blasted a solo home run to left.

Santa Clara returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. vs. Saint Mary's to kick off the final series of the year.
