James Tosses Gem to Lead Softball Past Saint Mary's

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball beat Saint Mary's 2-0 on Friday night to kick off the final weekend of the season.

McCall James tossed a gem to lead the Broncos (9-40, 4-9 WCC) for her first shutout of the season and second of her career.

The Santa Clara offense gave James all the support she would need with a pair of runs in the fifth.

It took James (5-18) just 76 pitches to complete the game. She allowed just five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

"McCall was great tonight," Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize said. "She hit her spots and threw strikes. When they got runners on base she was able to buckle down and get the big outs."

After an error by the Gaels (19-26-1, 6-7 WCC) in the fifth, Amanda Delfino knocked in a run with a ground out and Chiara Biagini followed with a two-out single to right to make.

"It was great to see us take advantage in a big spot tonight," Mize said. "We were able to score with a good situational at bat and get the clutch hit we needed. We've been missing that at times this year so it was great to see the offense come through like in that situation."

Katie Moss (11-13) got the loss for the Gaels despite pitching well. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 5-plus innings.

The Saint Mary's offense collected doubles from Andrea Hazel, Lollie Fitzpatrick, and Shannon Low.

Santa Clara returns to action tomorrow vs. Saint Mary's at noon and 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
