Softball Opens Season Saturday with Doubleheader vs. UC Davis

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the first action of the 2017 season, Santa Clara softball hosts UC Davis Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.

The Broncos are 16-40 all-time against UC Davis. The Aggies won the only meeting between the two teams last year 3-0 at the Aggie Invitational in the opening weekend of the season.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara hit .238 as a team last year and scored 134 runs. The Broncos hit 19 home runs, seven triples, and 54 doubles. In the circle, they posted a 4.78 ERA with four shutouts. Santa Clara pitchers fanned 119 batters a season ago.

Amanda Delfino is the top returning hitter for the Broncos. She hit .267 last season with a home run, two triples, and three doubles. She drove in 12 runs while scoring 16. Ellie Fisher hit .253 while struggling with injury but still led the team with 10 stolen bases. She scored 13 runs while adding a pair of doubles.

The Broncos will get ace Ciara Gonzales back after missing last season with a shoulder injury. In 2015 Gonzales led the team in wins (15), ERA (3.32), appearances (37), starts (26), complete games (12), shutouts (2), innings pitched (158), and strikeouts (48).

THE AGGIES
UC Davis finished last season at 15-35 and 4-17 in the Big West. The Aggies hit .242 as a team with 11 home runs, seven triples, and 40 doubles. They scored 148 runs while surrendering 231. Davis pitchers posted a 4.00 ERA with nine complete games. They struck out 132 in 322 1/3 innings.

The Aggies return their top two hitters from last season in Alexi Carney and Brianna Warner. Carney led the team with a .314 average and added a home run, two triples, and eight doubles while knocking in 18 and scoring 13. Warner led Davis with 32 runs scored and knocked in eight. She hit .301 with two triples and a double.

Andrea Reynolds is the top returning pitcher for the Aggies. Last season she appeared in 28 games and made 19 starts while going 5-15. Reynolds tossed 92 1/3 innings while punching out 26 with four complete games and one shutout.

Parking: For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to first pitch. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive.
