Softball Drops Two on First Day of Santa Clara Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On the opening day of the Santa Clara Invitational, Santa Clara softball fell to Creighton 4-0 and Weber State 9-0 in five innings.

Game 1
Creighton (3-9) jumped out to the early lead and scored three runs in the top of the first on four hits and a walk. The Blue Jays added another run in the top of the second on a Bronco error to make it 4-0.

Four Blue Jays each collected one hit with Allie Reinhart, Jordyn Sturgeon, and Sam Dellinger collecting one RBI apiece.

Micaela Vierra (1-3) started for Santa Clara but lasted just 1 inning. She allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Santa Clara (2-5) had good chances to score in the first and fifth. In the bottom of the first the first two batters reached but didn't advance. The Broncos then loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and Geenamarie Bonilla worked the count full but ultimately grounded out to second.

Ellie Fisher collected three hits for the Broncos and Adele Elkind and Kimberly Goulart each had one.

Michal Hylton (1-4) got the win for Creighton in the complete game five-hitter. She walked two and struck out two.

Game 2
Santa Clara (2-6) drew six walks in the game and was given three baserunners on Weber State (3-7-1) errors but only managed one hit.

In the top of the second, Weber State batted around and scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Wildcats took advantage of a Bronco error and added four singles and a walk of their own.

They would add two more runs in the top of the third and two in the fifth.

Landi Hawker picked up a pair of hits for Weber State with a run scored and an RBI. Sydney White scored three runs with a double and an RBI. Four different Wildcats picked up RBIs.

Aubree Kim (1-2) started for Santa Clara and picked up the loss in 1 1/3 innings. She allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits with two walks.

Tatiana Su'esu'e (2-1) got the win in the 5-inning complete game. She allowed just one hit with a strikeout.

Morgan Modesto picked up the lone hit for Santa Clara to lead off the bottom of the second.

The Broncos are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. vs. South Dakota and at 7 p.m. vs. Illinois-Chicago.
