Softball Topped by Weber State, Boise State Friday Afternoon

BOISE, Idaho
– In the first road action of the season, Santa Clara softball fell to Weber State 12-0 in five innings and Boise State 4-0 Friday at the SpringHill Suites Classic.

Game 1
After three scoreless innings, Weber State (6-9-1) scored four runs in the top of the fourth. With two down and the bases loaded, Takesha Saltern tripled down the right field line to clear the bases. Landi Hakwer followed with a double to make it 4-0.

The Wildcats would add eight more in the top of the fifth.

KyRae Kogianes and Riana Splinter both picked up three hits to lead the offense. Saltern had three RBIs and scored two runs while Sara Hingsberger was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

McCall James (0-1) started for the Broncos and picked up the loss in 4-plus innings. She allowed four runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Santa Clara's (3-9) best chance on offense came in the bottom of the first when Ellie Fisher led off with a single up the middle and stole second. Eleni Spirakis walked and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. A fly out and a groundout ended the inning without a run coming across.

The Broncos got seven runners on base but grounded into four double plays in just five innings.

Fisher led the Santa Clara offense with a pair of hits. Hanna Russell and Geenamarie Bonilla each collected one hit as well.

Tatiana Su'esu'e (3-1) tossed the five-inning complete game. She allowed four hits and walked two.

Game 2
A two-out rally for Boise State (12-3) in the bottom of the third broke a scoreless tie. A walk and a bunt single put runners on first and second and Rebekah Cervantes followed with an RBI single up the middle.

The Broncos would add three insurance runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Jessica McKay was 1-1 with two RBIs as a pinch-hitter. Izzy Serrano added two hits as well.

Christina Washington (6-1) tossed a complete game shutout with six hits and three strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, Bonilla led off with a single for Santa Clara (3-10) and Amanda Delfino followed with a base hit of her own to set up what looked like it could be a big inning. The next three batters all went down in order without the runners advancing.

Delfino and Morgan Modesto both picked up two this for Santa Clara while Kelsie Barnard and Bonilla each had one.

Micaela Vierra (1-4) went 5 innings in the start and picked up the loss. She allowed one run on four hits with four walks and a strikeout.

The Broncos return to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. vs. Weber State.
