BOISE, Idaho – On the final day of the SpringHill Suites Classic, Santa Clara softball lost to CSUN 11-7 Sunday morning and had its final game with Boise State canceled.
After a quick start on offense, Santa Clara (4-11) was undone by a seven-run bottom of the third by CSUN (10-9).
After a walk started the home half of the third and ended the day for Santa Clara starter Micaela Vierra, Savannah Horvath and Jessica LaPeirre hit back-to-back home runs off Ciara Gonzalez. McCall James entered for Gonzalez with two on and got the second out but Jessica Alexander knocked a single up the middle to bring in two more runs. After a double and a walk, Horvath came through with a two-run single to cap the inning.
Alexander was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored to lead the Matador offense. Horvath added a pair of hits, including a home run, and four RBIs as well.
Gonzalez (0-4) got the loss for Santa Clara in a 1/3 of an inning out of the bullpen. She allowed four runs on three hits with a walk. Vierra allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits but walked five and struck out one.
The Broncos scored four runs in the top of the first for the second consecutive game. They took advantage of four Matadors errors and picked up four hits in the inning. Hannah Russell knocked in the first run with a double and came around to score on a throwing error. Geenamarie Bonilla added an RBI single that ended the day for CSUN starter Daphne Pofek after just 1/3 of an inning. Kimberly Goulart brought in the fourth run of the inning with a bases-loaded walk.
Amanda Delfino was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, three runs scored, and an RBI to lead the Broncos. Russell was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI while Eleni Spirakis added a double and scored two runs.
Rebecca Bell (2-2) picked up the win for CSUN in 5 1/3 innings of relief. She allowed one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Pofek allowed four unearned runs on four hits.
After CSUN scored once in the bottom of the first, both teams added a pair of runs in the second. The Matadors scored once more in the fourth with Santa Clara answering with a run in the top of the fifth.
The Broncos head to New Mexico to play in the Lobo Classic beginning Friday vs. Stony Brook at 10 a.m. and at New Mexico at 3 p.m.
