Full Tournament Schedule
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball fell to Long Beach State 10-4 and Northwestern 2-1 Saturday on the second day of the Santa Clara Round Robin.
Game 1
After a solid start, the wheels came off for Santa Clara (7-16) when an error led to three Long Beach State (11-16-1) runs in the fifth. The 49ers added five more in the sixth and two in the seventh to blow it open.
Long Beach State loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the fifth. A grounder to third looked like a tailor-made double play but after the out at home was recorded, France's throw sailed over the first base and two runs came around to score. The 49ers added one more in the inning to take a 3-1 lead after four and a half.
Aniesa Maulupe was 4-for-5 with an RBI and Lauren MacLeod was 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Long Beach State offense. Julia Lombardi had two hits and drove in three runs with a double while Nichole Fry had two runs scored and two RBIs and Sammi Gyerman added two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Micaela Vierra (3-6) went 5-plus innings in the start for Santa Clara and got the loss. She allowed seven runs on 12 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
The Bronco offense showed some fight in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. A lead-off singled and back-to-back one out doubles got Santa Clara within 8-3. Another single ended the day for 49ers starter Christina Clermont (5-6) but Jessica Flores came in and got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Clermont tossed 5 1/3 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts to get the win.
Eleni Spirakis led the Santa Clara offense with three hits and two runs scored. Amanda Delfino had a double, a run scored, and two RBIs and Kelsie Barnard added two hits, including a double and a run scored.
Game 2
After just two combined hits through the first five innings, both offenses woke up over the final two frames. Both teams scored single runs in the sixth with Northwestern (8-14) coming back with the game-winner in the next inning.
In the top of the seventh, Alcy Bush reached on an error and pinch-runner Eva Stees moved to second on an illegal pitch. Brooke Marquez came through with a big RBI single to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
Aubree Kim (2-4) took the tough-luck loss in the complete game for Santa Clara (7-17). She allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
"Aubree was great tonight," Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize said. "She did everything she could for us and kept it toe-to-toe the whole way. We just couldn't come up with the big hit when we had our few chances."
With two down in the bottom of the seventh, Geenamarie Bonilla roped a double to left center to put the tying run in scoring position but Barnard grounded out.
Bonilla finished with a pair of doubles while Ellie Fisher picked up the other Bronco hit and scored a run.
After Northwestern broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff double and sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, Fisher used her legs to tie the game at 1-all in the bottom of the frame after a one-out single. She stole second and the throw from the catcher went into center. Fisher never hesitated around third and scored the tying run.
Kaley Winegarner (1-2) took a no-hitter into the fifth and had to settle for the complete game win. She allowed an unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
The Broncos close out the Santa Clara Round Robin tomorrow vs. Northwestern at 11:30 a.m. and Grand Canyon at 2 p.m.

Group discounts are also available through our ticket office sales and service consultants. Doors to Leavey Center, as well as its ticket office, are open one hour prior to the start of the game.
Parking: For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to first pitch. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive. During the weekend, campus parking facilities are free (except for permit required locations). Due to CIF basketball and other on campus events, the Leavey Lot may be full Saturday.
