Softball Falls Twice on Final day of Santa Clara Round Robin

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On the final day of the Santa Clara Round Robin, Santa Clara softball lost to Northwestern 7-2 and Grand Canyon 3-0.

Game 1
After a slow start for Santa Clara (7-18) in the circle, the Broncos held Northwestern (10-14) scoreless for four-straight innings but couldn't get the bats to come alive and mount a comeback. The Wildcats put up some insurance runs in the seventh after being shutout down to seal the victory.

Aubree Kim (2-5) started for the Broncos and walked the first two batters before being lifted after a ball to the third batter. Ciara Gonzalez entered and served up a three-run home run to Sammy Nettling to put Northwestern on top.

Nettling went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs. Kenzie Ellis added a double and two RBIs.

Ellis (3-5) went the distance for her third win of the year. She allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Santa Clara got on the board in the home half of the second. Morgan Modesto reached on a two-base error and come in to score on a double by Amanda Delfino. Santa Clara added another run in the frame to get within 4-2.

Ellie Fisher picked up three hits for the Broncos and Delfino added a double, a run scored, and an RBI.

Micaela Vierra tossed 4 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen before getting touched up by the Wildcats for three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Game 2
Niki Gonzalez finally broke a scoreless tie with two down in the top of the fifth and gave Grand Canyon (25-7) a 2-0 lead. Gonzalez stepped to the plate and with runners on second and third, smacked a grounder over the third base bag for a two-run double.

After her tough start in the first game, Kim (2-6) was solid in the second game of the day. She allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts while picking up the loss in the complete game.

Fisher collected a pair of hits for the Santa Clara (7-19) offense. Eleni Spirakis and Taylor Burns each had a base hit and the Broncos never had more than one baserunner at a time.

Briana Aguilar (7-2) collected the win in a complete game shutout for the Lopes. She allowed four hits and struck out three.

Santa Clara heads back out on the road starting Saturday at the Gaucho Classic II in Santa Barbara.
