Softball Takes Conference-Opening Series with Win at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball used a come-from-behind victory Sunday afternoon to take the first conference series of the season from Saint Mary's. The Broncos won the rubber match 4-2 over the Gaels after the teams split on Saturday.

Santa Clara (10-24, 2-1 WCC) scored three times in the fifth behind five hits and took advantage of an error to erase a 2-0 deficit. Ellie Fisher led off the inning with a single and a stolen base. Eleni Spirakis doubled to bring in the first run and Morgan Modesto singled to tie the game two batters later. With the bases loaded, an error on the shortstop allowed the Broncos to take the lead.

Fisher finished the day 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Spirakis, Burns, and Modesto all drove in a run and Kimberly Goulart added three hits.

Aubree Kim (3-8) went 4-plus innings in the start and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Ciara Gonzalez got her third save of the season in 3 shutout innings.

Saint Mary's (15-21, 1-2 WCC) got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Nikki Alexander came through with a two out RBI single to center. The Gaels added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Abbey Mariani led off with a home run to left.

Alexander was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and two walks to lead the Gaels offense. Bailey Lotz added a pair of hits as well.

Eryn McCoy (2-5) started and got the loss in 5 innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.e

Santa Clara plays at Cal Wednesday at 4 p.m.
