SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball lost a pair of close games to San Diego Saturday afternoon on the road. The Broncos dropped the first game 3-1 and suffered a walk-off 2-1 loss in game two.

Game 1
In the bottom of the sixth, San Diego (19-17, 5-2 WCC) took advantage of a leadoff error to take their first lead of the game. With the bases loaded and one out, a fielder's choice brought in the first run of the inning and a sac fly followed to make it 3-1.

Lindsay Clare was the only Torero to pick up more than one hit. She finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored while five others had one hit each with three players driving in one run apiece.

Micaela Vierra (5-11) picked up the loss despite pitching a complete game and not allowing any earned runs. She finished with three unearned runs on her record on seven hits with a strikeout.

Ellie Fisher picked up three singles, all to lead off an inning, but Santa Clara (11-30, 3-4 WCC) could only take advantage once, in the top of the third. Taylor Burns knocked in Fisher with an RBI double.

Megan Sabbatini (9-9) went the distance to collect a win. She allowed one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Game 2
A dropped foul ball in the bottom of the seventh proved to be devastating for Santa Clara (11-32, 3-6 WCC). Clare took advantage of her new life with a single down the first field line and Shannon McKeon followed with a single to left. After the second out was recorded, Sara Silveyra came up with the game-winning hit for San Diego (20-17, 6-2 WCC).

McKeon picked up two hits, including a double, with six other Toreros getting one hit each.

McCall James (1-4) pitched well for the Broncos but got the loss. She allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Santa Clara scored its lone run in the top of the fourth. After two quick outs, Kimberly Goulart tripled and Geenamarie Bonilla followed with a single to center that tied the game at 1-all after the Toreros took a 1-0 lead in the second.

Goulart was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a run scored to lead the Bronco offense. Fisher also added two more hits to finish with five on the day.

Sabbatini (10-9) pitcher her second complete game of the day and got her second win. She allowed one run on seven hits with three strikeouts.

The series wraps-up tomorrow at noon.
