Softball Scores Seven Unanswered Runs to Complete Comeback at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In the final road game of the season, Santa Clara softball topped San Diego 7-3 Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first, Santa Clara (12-31, 4-5 WCC) scored seven unanswered runs to complete the comeback and take the final game in the series behind the arm of Ciara Gonzalez and the bat of Morgan Modesto.

Gonzalez (3-6) entered after Bronco starter Aubree Kim was pulled without getting an out and got the win in 7 shutout innings of relief. She allowed just three hits and had three strikeouts.

Modesto went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBIs, and two runs scored to lead the offensive charge.

With the scored tied at 3 in the top of the sixth, an error and two singles loaded the bases for the Broncos. After the second out was recorded, another San Diego (20-18, 6-3 WCC) error let the go ahead run cross the plate.

Modesto added a three-run blast in seventh to tack on some insurance runs for Santa Clara.

With two outs and a runner on first in the fourth, Santa Clara staged a three-run rally to tie the game at 3-all. After Kimberly Goulart drew a walk, Modesto knocked in a run with a double to left center. Torero starter Megan Sabbatini was lifted for Lauren Berriatua who surrendered a two-run double to Kelsie Barnard.

Berriatua (6-5) ended up with the loss in 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. She allowed an unearned run on four hits with a strikeout.

Olivia Sandusky had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs as well as a run scored and Lauren Kane added two hits with a double and an RBI for the Torero offense.

The Broncos return home to face Pacific Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
