SANTA CLARA, Calif. – First-year Santa Clara softball head coach Lisa Dodd has completed her staff for the 2018 season. Steve Harrington and Gabby Maurice will serve as assistant coaches with Danielle Peterson as the volunteer assistant.
Harrington spent the last two seasons at La Habra High School. While there the team went 50-10 overall and 19-1 in the Freeway League en route to winning consecutive outright league titles. In 2017, the team moved to Division I and went to the second round in CIF postseason play. It was the first sport in the history of La Habra to compete in Division I. All 22 seniors over his two years went on the play at the collegiate level.
In 2010, Harrington earned the NFCA National Travel Ball Coaching Staff of the Year Award with the Orange County Batbusters. The award covers all travel ball teams across the United States. The Batbusters captured the ASA National Title and PGF National Title at the U16 level.
Harrington has coached at Chaminade College Prep, El Modena, and La Habra at the high school level and raised each to national prominence while winning three CIF titles. He has also won six national titles with the Batbusters, Team Mizuno, and the Southern California Stealth.
He received his B.A. in Clinical Psychology from CSUN in 1994 and got his M.S. in School Counseling in 2003, also from CSUN.
"I've known Steve for a long time," Dodd said. "His knowledge of the game is second to none and he will do great things for our program. He is a hard-worker that has been in the game for decades and will take over our offense. He is a great competitor and will help us be successful."
Maurice graduated from UCLA in 2017 with a B.A. in Political Science and was a four-year letter winner on the softball team as an outfielder. She was named NFCA West All-Region Second Team and All-Pac-12 Second Team as a sophomore and was on the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team in 2014.
Maurice hit .297 as a Bruin with 26 home runs and 119 RBIs. She set career-highs in both categories as a sophomore when she also posted a .496 on-base percentage and a .635 slugging percentage.
She has been a member of the Philippine Women's National Team since 2016 through dual citizenship.
Maurice also worked as an instructor at UCLA softball camps and as an intern in the UCLA Sports Information Department.
"Gabby was a tough ballplayer that kept her nose to the ground," Dodd said. "She is knowledgeable about all aspects of the game and will provide a relatable presence for our players. She is a role model for the team and can show them how to take it to the next level."
Peterson was a member of the UCLA softball team from 2005-08 where she made three Women's College World Series appearances.
She has extensive coaching experience, most recently as head coach of the Ohana Tigers U14 travel ball team. From 2009-16 Peterson was the Jets Gold U18 travel ball coach and has worked at Los Alamitos High School and El Camino College. She has also been an instructor at a number of clinics and academies, including ones at UCLA. After graduation, she spent the 2009 season as a graduate assistant at her alma mater.
"Danielle was my teammate in college and is the epitome of a team player," Dodd said. "She is full of energy and brings a great enthusiasm to the staff while helping to teach and create a great culture. I'm excited to have her and her knowledge on the staff."
