Softball Beaten by Cal Poly, Stanford Friday

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball opened the Stanford Nike Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Cal Poly and a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the host Cardinal.

Game 1
Lindsey Chalmers (3-1) tossed a gem for Cal Poly (5-6), allowing just five hits while picking up her first shutout of the year. Chalmers struck out five and allowed a walk.

After an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second, a single and a double to start the bottom of the third gave the Mustangs their second run of the game. With two down, Crimson Kaiser came up with a runner on second and knocked an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0.

Chelsea Convissar was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Cal Poly offense. Kaiser and Amanda Sandoval also picked up two hits apiece with Sandoval scoring a run.

Micaela Vierra (0-3) went the distance for the Broncos and allowed three runs on 10 hits with three walks.

Santa Clara (0-6) managed to get two runners on first and second in both the fourth and fifth innings with one down but couldn't take advantage either time.

Five Broncos collected a hit with Hanna Russell's double being the lone extra base hit.

Game 2
Despite falling behind early, Stanford (8-6) scored five unanswered runs and held off a seventh inning comeback attempt by Santa Clara (0-7).

Down 5-2 in the seventh, Jordan Dawkins doubled in Adele Elkind to bring the tying run to the plate and end the day for Stanford starter Kiana Pancino. Carolyn Lee entered to get her first save by recording the final two outs.

Pacino (3-1) ended up with the win in 6 1/3 innings while allowing three runs on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Hannah Russell picked up two RBIs for the Broncos and Samantha Johnson-Needham was 1-for-2 with a run.

A lead-off single and an error set up a three-run third for the Cardinal. Alyssa Horeczko knocked in the first run with a single up the middle and after two were out, Kristina Inouye singled to left to make it 3-2.

Horeczko finished 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Inouye was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Arden Pettit added two RBIs as well.

Aubree Kim (0-3) started for Santa Clara and got the loss in 5 innings. She allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks.

UP NEXT
The Broncos play Cal Poly tomorrow at noon.
