SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For the second day in a row, Santa Clara softball picked up a split at the San Diego Classic. The Broncos topped CSUN 7-5 in game two after falling 9-1 in 6 innings to UCF to start the day.
Game 1
UCF (11-8) jumped on Bronco starter Aubree Kim for four runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Knights added one in the third and four more in the fourth to finish off the game.
Tamesha Glover's grand slam in the first set the tone and Kaitlyn Jensen added a solo shot while going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs.
Kim (0-6) lasted 3 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.
UCF starter Alea White (8-5) tossed a 5-inning complete game while allowing a run on four hits with six strikeouts.
The Broncos (1-12) scratched across a run in the top of the fourth on lead-off singles from Ellie Fisher and Eleni Spirakis. Taylor Burns knocked in the run with a single to right.
Kelsie Barnard also picked up a hit for Santa Clara.
Game 2
Santa Clara's (2-12) offense came alive in the second game and scored a season-high seven runs, highlighted by a pair of RBIs from both Samantha Johnson-Needham and Hannah Russell.
A five-run fourth for the Broncos turned a two-run deficit into a 7-4 lead. Freshman Lauren Schiek got the scoring going with one out on an RBI single after a base hit and an error. The second run came in when pinch-runner Fisher took off for second and a wild throw got away.
After the second out was recorded, Burns singled to right to bring in Fisher and Russell followed two batters later after a walk with a two-run double to left.
Johnson-Needham finished the game 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks, two RBIs, and a run scored. Barnard also collected two hits, including a double, and Fisher scored a pair of runs.
Bronco starter Micaela Vierra was lifted after 2 innings and Kim (1-6) came in to pick up the win in 5 innings of relief. Kim allowed just an unearned run on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
CSUN (7-13) jumped out to an early lead with two in the first and single runs in the second and third behind RBIs from four of their top five hitters.
Megan Stevens had the best day with the bat, hitting a solo home run and scoring two runs.
In the circle, Stevens (0-2) didn't fare as well. She picked up the loss in 1/3 of an inning out of the bullpen by allowing three unearned runs on two hits.
UP NEXT
Santa Clara plays No. 3 UCLA at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow to conclude the tournament.
