Softball Topped Twice Sunday in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was topped twice Sunday at the ShareSLO Mustang Classic. The Broncos fell to North Dakota 7-3 in the opener and concluded the tournament with a 6-1 defeat to Marist.

Game 1
Santa Clara (3-16) jumped out to a lead in the second but North Dakota (13-10) responded in the home half of the inning and kept the offense going.

Natalie Gerber led the Fighting Hawks with two RBIs and Lexi Mayhood added a solo home run and two runs scored. Leadoff hitter Kaylin VanDomelen set the tone atop the order, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Hannah Bergh (6-6) went the distance for North Dakota to get the win. She allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits with a walk.

Down 6-1 in the sixth, the Broncos rallied with two outs to score a pair of runs. Eleni Spirakis reached on an error and Hannah Russell followed with a single before Taylor Burns roped a two-run double to left center.

Burns finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Russell was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Spirakis scored two runs.

Aubree Kim (1-8) lasted 4 innings in the start and got the loss while allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Game 2
Marist (6-9) took a 1-0 lead three batters into the game and never looked back, getting the lead to 4-0 before Santa Clara (3-17) was able to get a run home in the sixth.

Madison Lee was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI out of the two-hole to lead the Red Foxes offense. The three, four, and five hitters all picked up one RBI each as well.

Megan Beiermeister (4-2) went the distance, allowing a run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts to collected the win.

Spirakis continued her hot tournament at the plate, driving in Samantha Johnson-Needham with a double in the sixth for the Broncos lone run. Four others added a single apiece for the Santa Clara offense.

Micaela Vierra (2-7) started and got the loss in 3 innings. She allowed a run on two hits with two walks.
