Softball Falls to UC Davis in NorCal Challenge Opener

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball opened play at the NorCal Challenge with a 6-1 loss at UC Davis Friday afternoon.

The game was scoreless through three, but the Aggies (17-10) scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

After the Broncos (3-18) responded in the top of the fifth with a run, Isabella Leon smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1.

Leon finished with the home run and two runs scored while Caroline Figueroa also added two RBIs.

Brooke Yanez (11-3) went the distance for Davis, allowing one run on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts.

Ellie Fisher picked up two hits for Santa Clara with Sarah Ellersick also adding one. Samantha Johnson-Needham had the Broncos RBI on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

Micaela Vierra (2-8) went 4 1/3 innings in the start for Santa Clara and got the loss. She allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Broncos play Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and Sacramento State at 1:45 p.m.
