Softball Earns Saturday Split Against Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball used its bats to beat Fairleigh Dickinson 9-3 Saturday morning but fell to Sacramento State 7-1 in the second game of the day.

Game 1
Santa Clara's (4-18) bats came alive in the first game of the day, scoring a season-high nine runs and getting a strong start from Aubree Kim.

The Broncos scored in the first and added two runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, highlighted by a two-run home run by Taylor Burns in the fifth after Fairleigh Dickinson had scored three times in the top of the frame to get within 5-3.

Samantha Johnson-Needham was 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and two RBIs to lead the Santa Clara offense while Hannah Russell was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Eleni Spirakis added a pair of hits with a run scored and an RBI and Burns knocked in three.

Kim (2-8) went the distance to pick up the win and struck out a career-high nine. She allowed three unearned runs on four hits with seven walks.

All of the Knight's offense came in the fifth when a Bronco error on a sacrifice bunt led to three runs. Madison Emerson had the biggest hit in the inning, a two-out two run single.

Three other Knights collected a hit in the game with Summer Mendoza roping a double.

Erica Johnson (1-6) got the loss for Fairleigh Dickinson in 2 1/3 innings. She allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Game 2
Sacramento State (12-8) jumped on Santa Clara (4-19) starter Micaela Vierra for seven runs in two innings.

Suzy Brookshire had a big day at the plate, blasting two home runs and driving in five while Zamari Hinton was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Vierra (2-9) allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits with a walk while getting the loss.

Kelsie Barnard picked up two hits for the Broncos with Katherine Sanchez collecting an RBI and Adele Elkind scoring a run.

Savanna Corr (3-4) pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed a run on four hits with two strikeouts.

UP NEXT
The Broncos play UC Davis at 11:45 a.m. and Sacramento State at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
