Softball Falls Twice Sunday in NorCal Challenge Finale

DAVIS, Calif. – On the final day of the NorCal Challenge, Santa Clara softball was topped by UC Davis 7-0 and Sacramento State 6-3.

Game 1
UC Davis (18-11) got its bats going from the start, scoring three runs in the first against Santa Clara (4-20) starter Aubree Kim and then scored four in the next two innings to add to its lead.

Marisa Given was 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs to lead the Aggies offensive attack. Alex Sotomayor was also 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI with Frankie Mendoza and Isabella Leon adding RBIs as well.

Kate Kibby (7-4) went 5 shutout innings out of the bullpen to pick up the win. She allowed just two hits with two strikeouts.

Kim (2-9) lasted just 1 inning, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks.

The Broncos offense consisted of four singles from four different players.

Game 2
Despite picking up just two hits on the game, the Broncos (4-21) were able to get the tying run to the plate in the seventh after an error made it 6-3, but Morgan Modesto flied out to left with runners on the corners to end the game.

After scoring in the first, the Hornets (14-8) put up a run in the third and one in the fourth before taking a 5-0 lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by Suzy Brookshire.

Brookshire went 3-for-4 in the game with two home runs, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Sydnee Strong also hit a solo shot and Nene Alas picked up a pair of hits and scored a run out of the leadoff spot.

Danielle Sperry (3-1) tossed a complete game while allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

McCall James (0-3) also went the distance, but got the loss. She allowed six runs on 13 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Kelsie Barnard had both Santa Clara hits and added an RBI as well.

The Broncos return to action Saturday at 2:45 p.m. vs. Georgia Tech at the Matador Classic in Northridge.
