Softball Taken Down by Fresno State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In just its second home game of the year, Santa Clara softball fell to Fresno State 9-1 in six innings Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs (21-15) offense came out of the gate strong and continued to put pressure on Broncos (5-24) starter Aubree Kim.

Despite not picking up a hit in the inning, Fresno State scored two in the first when Kim (2-10) struggled to find the strike zone. The Bulldogs drew four walks in the inning and scored both runs on wild pitches.

They would add four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to put the game away.

Miranda Rohleder had two hits an RBI and scored two runs with a walk and a triple out of the leadoff spot. Vanessa Hernandez also added two hits and scored a run with Rachel Minogue knocking in two with a double.

Kim took the loss in 4 innings. She allowed six runs on five hits with six walks and two strikeouts.

The Broncos scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth despite hitting into a double play. After back-to-back singles, Fresno State starter Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings lost the strike zone and issued a walk to Samantha Johnson-Needham to load the bases before Eleni Spirakis got an RBI with another walk.

Kennedy-Cummings (4-1) picked up the win in 5 innings. She allowed one run on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Ellie Fisher and Kelsie Barnard both collected two hits for the Broncos offense with Morgan Modesto scoring the run.

Adele Elkind made her collegiate debut in the circle.

The Broncos begin conference play Friday with a doubleheader at BYU beginning at 1 p.m.
