BYU Completes Sweep of Softball

PROVO, Utah – BYU's offense once again proved too much as the Cougars completed the three-game sweep of Santa Clara softball with a 11-3  victory in five innings Saturday afternoon.

Despite falling behind 2-0 after a half inning, BYU (21-18, 3-0) responded with four runs in the first and four more in the second to take control.

Libby Sugg led the way with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Madison Merrell added a double and three RBIs and four Cougars scored two runs each.

Kerisa Viramontes started for the Cougars but was pulled after allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings and got a no-decision. Autumn Moffatt (5-4) picked up the win in 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen while allowing a run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Santa Clara (5-27, 0-3) started the game by loading the bases on two singles and an error with nobody out. Eleni Spirakis came through with an RBI single up the middle and Hannah Russell followed a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Morgan Modesto and Katherine Sanchez both had two hits for the Broncos with Modesto and Ellie Fisher each scoring a run.

Adele Elkind (0-2) started for Santa Clara but lasted just 2 innings and got the loss. She allowed eight runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout.

The Broncos play at Sacramento State Wednesday at 4 p.m.
