Softball Earns Split Friday at Capital Classic

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball earned a split on the first day of the Capital Classic Friday afternoon. The Broncos (5-14) topped Rider (0-13) in the day's opener but fell to UC Davis (19-4) 6-0 to finish the day.

Game 1
The Broncos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third but used a three-run fourth to put some distance between themselves and Rider. After the first out was recorded, the next six batters reached, three via singles and three via walks, to make it a 4-0 game.

Kat Sanchez and Emma Bickford led the offense with a pair of hits each with Bickford also adding an RBI and scoring two runs.

Regan Dias (4-3) started and got the win in 5 shutout-innings. She allowed just four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Lauren Schiek got her second save of the year with a scoreless seventh.

The Broncs cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth after two were out with just one on. Grace Stansfield brought home the first run with an RBI single through the left side and Sam Ward followed with a home run to left that made the score 4-3.

Debra Jones (0-2) took the loss for Rider, lasting 3 1/3 innings in the start. She allowed four runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Game 2
Two batters into the game, UC Davis took a 1-0 lead on a double by Megan Bower. Two batters later, Brooke Yanez homered to center to make it 3-0.

The Aggies added another run in the third and two more in the fifth.

Alyse Rojas added two RBIs for UC Davis with Meghan Bradbury also knocking in a run and the first six in the batting order all scoring a run.

Yanez (13-1) tossed a two-hit shutout with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Hannah Russell and Allyson Ferreira accounted for the Broncos offense with a single each.

Lauren Anderson (1-7) went the distance and picked up the loss while allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

UP NEXT
Santa Clara plays on the Sacramento State campus tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. against Rider and at noon against Sacramento State.
