Softball Swept to Close Fresno State Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was swept in a doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield and Fresno State Sunday afternoon. The Broncos (8-21) fell to the Roadrunners (13-15) 5-2 before closing the day with a 6-0 loss to the Bulldogs (21-11).

Game 1
A five-run third inning proved to be enough for Bakersfield despite Santa Clara getting the tying run to the plate in the seventh.

With the Roadrunners an out away from victory, Kat Sanchez and Eleni Spirakis both singled to bring Regan Dias to the plate and end the day for Avery Fitch. Chris Hipa came in and closed out the game with a grounder to third.

Fitch (2-3) got the win in 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Paige Johnson had the big blow for Bakersfield in the third when she launched a grand slam down the left field line.

Karah Wiseman also had a pair of hits, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored.

Hannah Russell continued her impressive weekend, collecting two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Kaitlyn Anderson had an RBI double for the Broncos who scored single runs in the second and sixth innings.

Lauren Anderson (2-9) started and took the loss in 3 innings. She allowed five runs on four hits with a pair of walks.

Game 2
Fresno State's offense struck early, with two in the first, three in the second, and one in the third, and Hailey Holcini was terrific in the start, shutting down the Bronco offense for 5 innings.

Holcini (10-4) allowed just two hits and struck out six while picking up the win.

On offense, three Bulldogs picked up two hits apiece with Kaitlyn Jennings and Rachel Minogue each adding two RBIs and Vanessa Hernandez contributing two runs scored.

Santa Clara got hits from Spirakis, Allyson Ferreira, and Kelsie Barnard, with Spirakis and Ferreira's hits being doubles.

Regan Dias (5-6) last just 2 2/3 innings in the start, taking the loss. She allowed six runs on seven hits with four walks.

Santa Clara heads to the Seattle Round Robin beginning Saturday.
