Softball Swept By Portland State and Seattle Sunday

SEATTLE – The Seattle Round Robin came to a close Sunday afternoon as Santa Clara softball was swept by Portland State and Seattle. The Broncos (8-25) lost to the Vikings (13-21) 14-3 in six innings and to the Redhawks (25-14) 6-5 in eight innings.

GAME 1
A five-run first got the Vikings off to a fast start and an eight-run sixth sealed the deal.

In the offensive explosion, every player picked up at least one hit and every starter scored at least one run for Portland State.

Darian Lindsey went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored, and two RBIs to lead the offense out of the leadoff spot. Jessica Flanagan and Kaela Morrow both added three hits apiece with Flanagan scoring three runs and knocking in two and Morrow scoring twice and driving home two.

Haley Schimmel (3-3) went the distance to get the win. She allowed three runs on 11 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Santa Clara offense managed single runs in the second, fifth, and sixth innings led by Sammy Needham and Emma Bickford who both had two hits. Needham and Jordan Dawkins also added an RBI apiece.

Regan Dias (5-8) started but lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing five runs on five hits, and took the loss.

GAME 2
After Santa Clara scored four in the seventh to send the game to extras, Seattle won it one batter into the bottom of the eighth when and error on a sacrifice bunt by Cherise Silvan allowed the game-winning run to cross the plate.

Silvan finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Bailey Thompson added two RBIs on a home run. Ally Choate and Kaylee Ree both had two hits and combined to score three runs.

Carley Nance (13-6) started and went 3 innings before reentering to pitch the final 2 and get the win. In 5 innings, Nance allowed a run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Despite trailing the whole way, the Broncos mounted a comeback in the seventh and scored four runs to tie the game at 5-all. They loaded the bases with no outs and after a run had come across on a fielder's choice, a two-run single by Regan Dias was followed by a game-tying RBI single through the right side by Needham.

Six different Broncos each collected one hit with Bickford's being a double. Bickford also scored two runs and Allyson Ferreira had an RBI.

Lauren Schiek (1-2) took the loss in 4 1/3 strong innings out of the bullpen. She allowed just an unearned run on one hit with a walk.
