Softball Drops Rubber Match in Extras to LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball went to extra innings in the rubber match of its three-game series with LMU but fell 11-7 in nine innings Sunday afternoon.

The Lions (30-17, 6-3 WCC) saw a three-run first inning lead evaporate in the bottom of the frame and trailed from the third inning to the sixth before breaking through with a four-run ninth.

Delanie Wisz hit what looked to be a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth but the wind knocked it down and turned it into a double. The bad break didn't hurt the Lions, as Wisz would come in to score two batters later on an RBI double by Desiree Moreno. LMU added three more runs in the inning to take an 11-7 lead.

Wisz led the Lions with a pair of doubles three RBIs and a run scored. Marshall added four hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Maddison Flores and Riley Ehlen both had three hits with Flores scoring twice and knocking in two more.

Linnay Wilson (6-1) went 6 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to get the win after starter Hannah Bandimere lasted just one inning. Wilson allowed just one run on seven hits with a strikeout.

A two-out rally in the third inning gave Santa Clara (10-30, 2-4 WCC) its first lead of the day. After the first two batters went down in order, the next six hitters all reach via three singles, two walks, and a hit by pitch.

Emma Bickford led the offense with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored with Eleni Spirakis, Kelsie Barnard, and Kat Sanchez all adding two hits each

Regan Dias (6-8) started and got a no-decision in 5 2/3 innings. She allowed seven runs on 13 hits with three walks and a strikeout. Lauren Schiek (2-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with a walk in 3 1/3 innings.

LMU scored three times in the top of the first but with two on and two out in the bottom of the inning, Bickford tripled and came in to score on an error to even the score.
