Softball Completes Sweep of San Diego Sunday

SAN DIEGO, Calif.Regan Dias carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and the offense stayed hot as Santa Clara softball completed a weekend sweep of San Diego with a 7-3 victory Sunday afternoon on the road.

The Broncos (15-32, 7-5 WCC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first and added on with another in the second before a three-run fourth created some distance.

Dias (9-8) no-hit the Toreros (19-27, 3-9 WCC) for 4 2/3 innings before finally surrendering a hit that also broke up the shutout. Dias ended up going 6 1/3 innings to get the win while allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Eleni Spirakis led the Santa Clara offense with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Morgan Modesto and Hannah Russell both added three hits with Modesto scoring twice and Russell coming across the plate once.

San Diego tried to mount a comeback in the seventh, scoring two runs and ending the day for Dias but Lauren Schiek came in and shut the door.

Shelbi Evans picked up two hits, a run scored, and an RBI with four other Toreros adding a hit each.

Delaney Heller (10-10) took the loss. In the start, she lasted 3 2/3 innings while allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Santa Clara returns home to take on BYU Friday at 4 and 6 p.m. to open the final series of the season.
