DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball opened the 2020 season with an 11-6 defeat against Boise State at the NorCal Kickoff.

Boise State (2-0) jumped on Santa Clara (0-1) starter Aubree Kim for two runs in the first and would add seven more, five charged to Kim, in the second to blow things open early. The Broncos would add two more in the fifth for some insurance.

Serena Huchingson went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the offense. Bella Rocco added two hits and an RBI as well with Ashlyn Adams and Alison Seng each driving in two runs.

Santa Clara got back in the game by scoring four in the top of the third and ending the day for Boise State starter Micaela Leal. Eleni Spirakis was hit by a pitch to lead off and a throwing error brought her in to score. Hannah Russell followed with an RBI single and Regan Dias capped the inning with a two-run blast that cut the deficit to 9-4.

Leal (1-0) gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk and a strikeout to get the win. Jordan Schuring tossed the final 4 1/3 innings to pick up the save. She allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with a strikeout.

After Boise State scored two more, another error by the Broncos in the fifth led to a two-run double by Emma Bickford to make it 11-6.

Russell and Bickford both finished the day with three hits and Taylor Burns added two. The top five in the Broncos batting order all scored a run and the top six all had at least one hit.

Kim (0-1) ended up with the loss in 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on four hits with a strikeout and four walks.
