SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball travels to the Highlander Classic hosted by UC Riverside beginning Friday. The Broncos will play UTEP Friday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m., Idaho State Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Riverside Saturday at 2 p.m.
The 2020 season began at the NorCal Kickoff where the Broncos picked up two wins in five games. They topped Idaho State 8-0 in 5 innings to give head coach Gina Carbonatto her first collegiate win and then topped Sacramento State 7-4 in the weekend's finale.
Sammy Needham had a big weekend to lead the offense. Starting all five games, the junior hit .500 with a double, three RBIs, and four runs scored while also swiping two bases in two attempts. Freshman Ashley Trierweiler hit .462 with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored and Emma Bickford drove in a team high five RBIs while hitting .412 with two doubles and two runs scored. Eleni Spirakis hit .400 with four runs scored and a triple with Hannah Russell batting .385 with two RBIs and Regan Dias adding two doubles and a home run to go with a .333 batting average.
In the circle, Dias shined in three appearances, posting a 0.69 ERA. Her lone start was a complete game shutout that saw her toss 4 2/3 no-hit innings. She also picked up a win out of the bullpen. Lauren Anderson, Aubree Kim, and Hannah Edwards all started games with Lauren Schiek making two appearances in relief.
