LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Having one of the best individual seasons in program history, Ashley Trierweiler of Santa Clara softball is one of 30 nominees for the 2021 Schutt Sports/NFCA DI Freshman of the Year. Trierweiler becomes the first student-athlete from a West Coast Conference institution to be nominated.
Among qualified hitters, Trierweiler is currently ninth in the country, third amongst freshmen, with a .475 batting average. She also leads the Broncos in on-base percentage (.550), stolen bases and attempts (10-for-11), runs scored (15), and triples (2) to go with a double and nine RBIs while starting all 22 games.
Before the 2020 season was shutdown, Trierweiler was just as impressive. In 23 games, she hit a team-best .409 with a .459 OBP and added 20 runs scored, five doubles, nine RBIs, and eight steals in as many attempts.
The winner will be announced prior to the start of the 2021 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes. To be eligible, student-athletes must be nominated by their member head coach. With the cancellation of last year's season due to COVID-19, candidates hail from the 2020 and 2021 freshman classes. Due to having two freshman classes eligible for the award, an additional five players have been added to the traditional top 25.
On May 13, the list will be trimmed down to the top 10 and the three finalists will be released on May 27. The 2021 Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year will be announced on June 1.
