Women's Tennis Falls to No. 13 Cal

Jan. 31, 2002

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Cal women's tennis team (1-0) opened up its season today at Hellman Tennis Complex in top form, defeating the visiting Santa Clara Broncos (2-2) by a score of 7-0.

Even though SCU lost the doubles point, Santa Clara's only victory came on the third doubles court, when Ashley Campbell and Jenny Siegel won their contest 8-6.

Three Cal women made their regular season debut on Thursday. Sophomores Jody Scheldt and Kristin Case, along with freshman Rio Del Rosario. Scheldt played last season for the University of Iowa, and opened the day with Raquel Kops-Jones on the first doubles court, defeating the Bronco team of Janalle Kaloi and Christine Limbers by an 8-4 score. Scheldt performed well on the singles court as well, splitting the first two sets 7-5, 5-7 before SCU's Nicle McCord retired with Scheldt leading the third by 2-1.

Case was with the team last season, but did not compete in a dual meet during the 2001 campaign. She was selected, however, to play Bronco Pati Ruiz on the fifth court, and did not disappoint, winning in a pair of 6-2 sets.

Del Rosario, who was Case's partner in doubles, spent her day on the sixth court, also winning in a pair of straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The Broncos return to action Saturday afternoon at Sonoma State. The road match is slated for a noon first serve.
