SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team defeated Northern Arizona 6-1 this evening at the Degheri Tennis Center. Santa Clara is now 13-6 on the season, while the Lumberjacks fall to 3-12.
The Broncos swept doubles play to earn the first point of the afternoon. Senior Catherine Cochrane closed the match on court two with a service ace to lift her and Erika Barnes to an 8-2 victory. At the top doubles position, NAU closed a 5-2 deficit to 6-5 before Janalle Kaloi and Kelly Leathers won the last two games to clinch the team point. On the very next serve, Kimberly Daniel and Jessie Strunk closed out their victory at No. 3 doubles.
Strunk's victory at No. 6 singles pushed the Broncos ahead 2-0 in the team score, and was followed by Leathers' 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katie Schurr in the second singles slot. Barnes clinched the team win with her win on the fourth court. Cochrane and Kaloi closed out the Bronco scoring with their straight-set victories.
NAU's lone point of the day came at No. 5 singles, with Sheena Lister's come-from-behind victory.
"Before this match we decided to be disciplined with our preparation and attitude," head coach Damon Coupe explained. "Having the end of a season in sight tends to open the opportunity to let up on things and we consciously decided to make and effort to tighten our games up. The team responded played extremely well in doubles and really out-competed the other team. It was also a special day for our seniors to win in both singles and doubles, as the both are putting a close to outstanding collegiate careers."
The Broncos return home on Tuesday for the final home match of the regular season, a 3 p.m. contest against UC Santa Cruz. Admission is free.
