SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's tennis senior Janalle Kaloi has been selected to the pre-qualifying singles draw of the 2004 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, to be hosted this fall in Pacific Palisades. Fellow senior Catherine Cochrane will join Kaloi in the doubles bracket, while sophomores Kelly Leathers and Erika Barnes also earned a pre-qualifying doubles spot.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships is the first of three collegiate tennis championships this season, and is considered the premier hard court event of the fall season, as it features the top players in Division I tennis.
The 128-player (64 doubles) pre-qualifying tournament will be held Oct. 2-4 at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center. Four players and four doubles teams will advance from there to a 64-player qualifier tournament, Oct. 5-6 at the Riviera Tennis Club. Eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw. Should the Broncos advance through the pre-qualifying and qualifying tournaments, the main draw will take place Oct. 7-10.
"I am extremely excited for these young ladies to receive this opportunity, as it is the toughest individual tournament of the fall season," head coach Damon Coupe said. "They should take pride in being selected to play against the top players in collegiate tennis. This is a wonderful start to what we're already planning to be an exciting year for Bronco tennis."
Kaloi is a two-time All-West Coast Conference honoree and was the 2002 WCC Freshman of the Year. A team captain, the Honolulu native is ranked sixth in Bronco record books for all-time singles victories (49) and seventh in combined doubles wins (47). She and Cochrane represented SCU at No. 1 doubles during the spring season and earned All-WCC doubles recognition.
As freshmen, Barnes and Leathers made an impact in the program's single-season marks, winning 14 matches to tie for seventh best in program history. They, too, earned honors from the conference.
The 2004-05 Broncos will begin the fall season by taking part in the Bulldog Classic, to be hosted by Fresno State Sept. 24-26 at the Wathen Tennis Center.
