Tennis Teams to Compete at ITA Regionals

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's tennis programs are participating in their respective ITA Regional tournaments. Action starts today for the Bronco men at the University of California in Berkeley and for the women at Stanford University in Palo Alto.

The Bronco men will compete today through Tuesday at two sites: the Hellman Tennis Center on the UC campus, and at the Channing Courts, also in Berkeley. Should rain close the outdoor courts, back up plans are in place at the San Francisco Tennis Club, and fans are advised to call the SCU Men's Tennis Office at 408-554-4069 for voicemail updates.

Jan Macek is seeded ninth in singles while the Broncos have found success in doubles, as last year's tandem of Eric Kochanski and Gernot Fischer advanced to the finals of the 2003 event in Oregon. Kochanski is paired with Francisco Zepponi for this year's event. The duo received a first-round by and will begin action on Saturday morning.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn sports in the November 4-7 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship at the University of Michigan. There are 17 regional championship taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.

The Bronco women will compete today through Monday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the Stanford campus.

Santa Clara will be led by senior Janalle Kaloi, who is coming off a great showing at the ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying Championship after besting top players from Colorado State and Penn State. Junior Jessie Strunk is also coming off a solid performance at last week's Saint Mary's Invitational, where she advanced to the semifinal.
