SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team could not make it two straight victories, falling 7-0 to Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos were coming off a 5-2 win over Gonzaga on Saturday, but after narrowly losing the doubles point, SCU could not win a singles match and fell to 1-3 on the season. Lindsay McBride and Stephanie Galainena provided a bright spot for the team, capturing a doubles victory at No. 2.

"Saint Mary's is a good team and they proved that today," said head coach Ben Cabell. "We need to get back to work and keep improving. The team had some good performances today in doubles so we will have to build on that."

The doubles point could have gone either way as all three matches were in doubt until the end. At No. 2, Galainena and McBride had an impressive performance in just their second match together. They defeated Femke Strijbis and Stef Ordoveza 8-6. The number one team of Erika Barnes and Casey Knutson played another excellent match, but could not overcome Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath, dropping an 8-6 decision. Kim Daniel and Myra Davoudi put up a good battle at No. 3 before losing 8-5 to Marah Calvo and Erin Young.

After the narrow 2-1 loss in doubles, the Broncos could not bounce back in singles, dropping all six matches in straight sets. Knutson returned to No. 1 singles and forced a tiebreaker in the first set against Lambert. After losing 7-2 in the tiebreaker, Knutson could not keep pace in the second set, eventually falling 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. The rest of the lineup also could not pull out a victory as the Gaels swept the singles matches 6-0.

"We can't dwell on this match today," said Cabell. "San Francisco is coming down here on Friday and they are a good team. With a good week of practice we should be ready for another solid performance."
