SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team dominated San Jose State University Thursday, earning a 7-0 win at the Degheri Tennis Center. The win clinched the Rivalry Series for SCU for the fifth year in a row. The team has now won two straight matches to even its record at 3-3 for the season.
Stephanie Galainena began the sweep of the singles matches with her 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 6 position. Closely following was Casey Knutson at No. 1 with 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory. At No. 2, Myra Davoudi played a difficult match, finally defeating Ashley Tavita 7-5, 6-0. Kim Daniel claimed her win at No. 3 winning both sets. After losing the first set 6-1, Lindsay McBride made an amazing recovery at No. 3 to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-4. Closing out the day's matches was Erika Barnes, who earned a point at No. 5 with a victory of 6-4, 6-2. Daniel, Barnes and Galainena all won their second straight singles matches and Daniel is now 5-1 this spring in dual matches.
In doubles, Erik Barnes and Casey Knutson started the Broncos off to a good start, claiming their No. 1 victory 8-4. Galainena and McBride kept up the pace at No. 2 with an 8-4 win, clinching the doubles point. Rounding up the doubles matches, Daniel and Davoudi claimed the No. 3 spot with an 8-5 win.
The Broncos resume West Coast Conference play next Wednesday, March 7 when they go up against Loyola Marymount at Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 10, Santa Clara takes on Long Beach State at Long Beach starting at 11:00 a.m.
