SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Bronco women's tennis team won its second match in a row to move its season record to 5-4. Santa Clara defeated North Texas 7-0 at the Degheri Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon in another impressive performance. The Broncos have now won four out of their past five matches on the season.
After defeating Montana on Friday afternoon, the Broncos kept their momentum going on Sunday. The team dominated the doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. At No. 3, Kim Daniel and Myra Davoudi cruised to an 8-2 win, while the No. 1 and No. 2 teams of Erika Barnes and Casey Knutson and Stephanie Galainena and Lindsay McBride respectively, each had strong finishes to win the same 8-4 score.
The Broncos continued their strong play in singles as they won all of their matches in straight sets. At No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, Daniel, Barnes and Galainena dropped only two games in their three matches with Galainena winning 6-0, 6-0 against Mary Poe at No. 6. The win was the fourth straight for Barnes, while Daniel improved to 6-1 in the dual match season.
Davoudi and McBride also had excellent performances at No. 2 and No. 3, winning straight setters against Megan Schmulbacj and Aziza Aba Butain respectively.
The match of the day again came at the top spot with Knutson dueling with Idalina Franca. Knutson blew through the first set 6-0, but the second set was a classic. The set went back and forth and eventually went into a tiebreaker at 6-6. The tiebreaker went 24 points with Knutson pulling out a 13-11 victory to finish off the match.
SCU hosts the Portland Pilots on Saturday, March 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center. Saturday is Senior Day for the Broncos as Barnes, Daniel and Knutson will be recognized for their outstanding careers at SCU.
