SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team lost a tightly-contested West Coast Conference match to the Portland Pilots 5-2. Seniors Casey Knutson and Kim Daniel won their singles matches on Senior Day, but the Broncos lost three three-set matches to the Pilots. Santa Clara is now 5-5 on the season.

The doubles pair of Knutson and Erika Barnes continued to play well as they defeated Jenna Tanzer and Megan Sporndli 9-7. However, Lindsay McBride and Stephanie Galainena and Kim Daniel and Myra Davoudi dropped their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively and Portland grabbed the doubles point.

Knutson and Daniel won their singles matches in straight sets to get two quick points for the Broncos in singles. Daniel is now 7-1 in singles in the dual season and the victory was the second straight for Knutson.

At No. 2, Davoudi fell 6-3, 7-6 (3) and the remaining three matches all went to the third set, but SCU could not win any of them. McBride went up a set on Court 3, but could not hold on, falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, while Galainena also fell after winning the first set. Barnes' match came down to a third set tiebreaker against Anna Gullickson at No. 5 singles. Gullickson proved to be too tough in the end, capturing the tiebreak 7-3.

Santa Clara gets back in action on Sunday, March 25 against the Saint Mary's Gaels. The match begins at 12 noon in Moraga.
