Santa Clara continues its hectic schedule this week, playing three matches against UC Santa Cruz, Fresno State and Cal Poly. The Broncos play the Banana Slugs at 3:00 p.m. PT on Tuesday, April 10 at the Degheri Tennis Center. Following that match, SCU plays two matches on the road, one at Fresno State on Friday, April 13 at 1:30 p.m. PT and the second at Cal Poly on Saturday, April 14 at 12 noon PT.
Last Week
Santa Clara dropped three matches last week against No. 41 Washington State, Texas-Arlington and No. 56 Southern Methodist. Washington State defeated the Broncos 6-1 on April 5 with Casey Knutson winning the Broncos only singles match. Knutson teamed with Erika Barnes to win at No. 1 doubles also. The following day, SCU played Texas Arlington on the road after traveling the previous night. The Mavs earned a 4-3 win over SCU. Knutson, Barnes and Stephanie Galainena got wins for the Broncos. The team completed its stretch of three games in three days on April 7 against SMU. The Mustangs swept all six singles matches to earn a 6-0 win. The doubles matches were not played due to inclement weather.

Knutson Gets Win No. 50
Casey Knutson won two out of three singles matches last week to become the eighth player in Santa Clara women's tennis history to earn 50 wins in a season. She knocked off Amy Toth of Washington State and Monika Peciulionyte of Texas-Arlington on April 5 and 6 respectively. The wins moved her ahead of Kim Daniel, who has 48 career wins. Erin Barry (1993-96) is currently seventh with 51 career wins.
Barnes Moving Up All-Time Doubles Leaderboard
Erika Barnes entered the 2007 dual season with 45 combined doubles wins in her career, placing her 10th all-time in program history in doubles wins. By winning nine matches so far this season, she has moved into sole possession of fifth place with 54 wins. She is now four wins behind Sarah Duncan (1997-00) for fourth place.
Barnes and Knutson Near Top-10
The doubles tandem of Erika Barnes and Casey Knutson has proven to be one of the strengths for the Broncos this season. In the dual season, Barnes and Knutson have posted a 9-5 record in doubles and they now have 12 wins together this season. They are two wins away from tying four other doubles pairs for seventh all-time with 14 doubles wins in a single season. For their careers, Barnes and Knutson have won 15 matches together, a number that puts them into a tie with the teams of Christine Limbers/Janalle Kaloi and Sarah Duncan/Nicole McCord for eighth all-time in career doubles wins. Santa Clara has four regular season matches remaining prior to the WCC Championships for them to move up the rankings.
Madden Makes Appearance
Freshman Meghan Madden made just her third dual match singles appearance of the season on April 7. Madden played No. 6 singles against Southern Methodist after Myra Davoudi injured her shoulder the previous day against Texas-Arlington.
Doubles Consistency
The Broncos have had very good consistency with their pairings in doubles this season unlike last year. In 2006, 12 different pairs played a dual match for the Broncos and no doubles pair played more than 10 matches together in the dual season. This year, Casey Knutson and Erika Barnes have already played 14 together, while Stephanie Galainena and Lindsay McBride and Kim Daniel and Myra Davoudi have played 11 apiece. The team has had six different pairings in doubles in 2007. The Broncos already have 18 wins in doubles this year in duals, just two fewer than last season. Overall, SCU has 27 doubles wins in 2006-07 and needs two more wins to surpass last season's total of 28.

The Broncos have now won 36 singles matches in duals in 2007, surpassing last season's total of 32.
Last Match Against UC Santa Cruz
The Broncos defeated the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 7-0 on April 19, 2005 in the final home match of the season. SCU won all three doubles matches, losing only two games in the three matches to take a 1-0 lead. In singles, Santa Clara won every match in straight sets to claim the sweep. Erika Barnes played No. 4 for Santa Clara and earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Megan Sweeney, while Kim Daniel played the No. 5 position for the Broncos. Daniel defeated Angelizen Zabala 6-3, 6-2 in her match. Janalle Kaloi, Kelly Leathers, Catherine Cochrane and Jessie Strunk won the other four singles matches for the Broncos. Barnes and Daniel also won doubles matches for SCU.
Last Match Against Fresno State
SCU fell 7-0 to the No. 24 Fresno State Bulldogs on April 15, 2006 at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Bulldogs won all three doubles matches and then swept singles in a convincing win over the Broncos. Myra Davoudi played a strong match at No. 6 singles, forcing a first-set tiebreaker before losing to Bruna Paes. The Bulldogs featured two ranked doubles teams and two ranked singles players.
Last Match Against Cal Poly
Santa Clara defeated the No. 56 ranked Cal Poly Mustangs 4-3 in San Luis Obispo on Jan. 17, 2005. The Broncos captured the doubles point behind wins from No. 1 pair Janalle Kaloi and Kelly Leathers and No. 3 pair Erika Barnes and Myra Davoudi. In singles, Kaloi and Leathers earned victories at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, while Jessie Strunk captured a win at No. 6. Both Kaloi and Strunk won in tough three-set matches. Erika Barnes and Kim Daniel were the only current Broncos to play singles for SCU that day.
