Bronco Student-Athletes Post Highest Recorded GPA; Top 3.0 for 19th Time in 20 Quarters

With 24 Bronco student-athletes achieving a 4.0 grade point average and four teams checking in with a 3.4 GPA or higher, Santa Clara University's student-athletes recorded a school-record 3.191 grade point average (GPA) for the Spring 2013 quarter.  They also topped 3.0 or better for the 19th time in 20 quarters. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.107.  

The previous high water marks were a 3.14 GPA for the Spring 2011 quarter and  3.11 in the Winter of 2009.

In addition, 119 of the 350 Bronco student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher this quarter and 50 Bronco student-athletes have a 3.8 or higher quarter this GPA. There are 73 student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

"This high grade point average is a great testament to our coaches - for the type of students they are recruiting and the culture of academic performance they are fostering, as well as the diligent efforts of Zoe Kranzler and Angela Munger, our academic services officers," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.  "With this year's Valedictorian, Ashley Armstrong, hailing from our women's basketball team, it is clear that Bronco student-athletes are not only getting it done in the classroom here but are leading the charge." 

The women's tennis team posted the highest GPA at 3.582 for the Spring 2013 quarter.  Women's cross country has the highest cumulative GPA at 3.478.

"It's is a wonderful accomplishment what our team has been able to achieve both on and off the court," said Bronco head women's tennis coach Ben Cabell, who was named the 2013 WCC Coach of the Year after his team won a share of the WCC title.   "The academic record of this team has always been important and is something we are very proud of.  They are such a great group of well-rounded individuals and I couldn't be happier for them."

The men's cross country team led the men's teams with a 3.386 GPA during the Spring 2013 quarter.  It is the seventh straight quarter they have led the men's side.  They also have the top cumulative GPA at 3.319.

"We're once again very proud of our teams efforts in the classroom," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.  "Our student-athletes exemplify the SCU mission of educating the whole person.  They are successful in so many ways."

Fifteen Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Spring 2013 quarter, with 11 teams posting a 3.2 GPA or higher for the Spring 2013 quarter. In addition, 12 teams have a 3.0 GPA or better for their cumulative GPA.

The 15 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Spring 2013 quarter include: baseball, men's cross country, men's golf, men's track, men's soccer, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's rowing, women's cross country, women's track, softball, women's soccer, women's tennis, volleyball and women's water polo.
