SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team took the No. 41 Saint Mary's Gaels down to the wire, but fell in the end by a final score of 4-3. The Broncos are now 6-9 and 2-4 in the WCC.
"This is a really tough loss, but we played a really good team right down to the last couple of points," said head coach Ben Cabell.
After taking the doubles point in yet another match, Saint Mary's quickly tied the match at 1-1 with a win on Court 6 as Emma Critser beat Danielle Zinn 6-1, 6-0.
The teams continued to trade points as Delphine Rouvillois beat Danielle Flores 6-3, 6-4, followed by Jana McCord winning over Nabila Farah 6-2, 6-4. The Gaels took the lead for a moment after the match on Court 4 ended in the favor of Catherine Leduc over Daniella Silva 6-3, 6-4. But Chelby Cooke rapidly responded, corralling the sixth point to Santa Clara's side with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jamie Pawid to tie the score at 3-3. With the match's fate lying on the final match, Zeina El Tawil took the early lead by taking the first set. Kareena Manji came back to force a third set and won the set, winning the match for Saint Mary's.
"We have to finish those off," Cabell said. "We have another tough one tomorrow against Pacific, so our job is to respond for that."
Santa Clara hosts Pacific tomorrow at 10 a.m.
