Draws/Results: Cal Nike Fall Invitational | Draws/Results: Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

Santa Clara's women's tennis saw its first action of the fall season Friday and Saturday with players competing at both the Cal Nike Fall Invitational and Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

Four of the six entries at the Cal Invite advanced past the opening round in their brackets, including a trip to the doubles semifinals by senior Chelby Cooke and freshman Madison Clarke.

On Friday, all three Broncos in the singles Gold bracket of the Cal Invite swept their opening-round matches. Zeina El Tawil took down Jessie Lee of UC Davis 6-4, 6-1, Clarke defeated Nevada's Blaga Delic 6-2, 6-2, and Janet Liu blanked her opponent, Audrey Mayer of Cal, 6-0, 6-0.

Also on Friday at Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts, Cooke lost in the round of 32 in the Blue bracket to Nicolette Tran of BYU 6-3, 6-4. Cooke went on to fall to Marie Klocker of San Jose State 6-3, 6-1 in a consolation bracket.

Cooke and Clarke teamed up for an opening-round doubles victory Friday in the Gold bracket, and another one Saturday. That twosome knocked off Ilana Oleynik and Sayaka Tsugai of Cal Poly, 8-1 in the round of 16 then took down Davidson's Kamila Kecki and Kelsie Bryant 8-5 in Saturday's quarterfinals. However, their run came to an end in the semifinal, falling to top-seeded Lyann Hoang and Olivia Hauger of Cal.

During Saturday's action, Clarke, making her collegiate debut this weekend, ended up falling in the round of 16 to Sacramento State's Andie Mouzes, 6-4, 6-2. El Tawil was also knocked out in the round of 16, being forced to retire due to injury against Gaelle Rey of San Jose State with the match knotted at 5-all in the opening set.

Liu and El Tawil teamed up in doubles, falling in the opening round of the Gold bracket to USF's Genev McCloskey and Shanna DosSantos, 8-7(6). Liu and El Tawil moved into the consolation bracket, but did not compete due to El Tawil's injury.

"Overall, this was about what I expected for the first weekend. We need to play more matches," head coach Ben Cabell said. "I like our team. We will get improve as the season moves along and our new players will certainly help us. Madison Clarke got off to a nice start to her career this weekend with wins in singles and doubles."

In Saturday's consolation round-robin action, UC Santa Barbara's Amanda Atansson downed Liu 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5) and St. Mary's Parminder Kaur defeated Clarke 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8).

In the ITA All-American Championships, which was being held at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, California, the pair of Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva fell Saturday in the opening round to Daneika Borthwick and Yukako Noi of Florida State, 8-2.

The next tournament on the slate for the Broncos is the St. Mary's Invitational beginning on Friday in Moraga, California.
