Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season With Win Against Holy Names

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The women's tennis team kicked off their spring season with a 6-1 win against Holy Names University on Sunday.

"It's always great to start off the season with a win," said head coach Ben Cabell. "I'm happy; obviously, we have a couple of things to work on, but that's where we should be this early."

The duo of Daniella Silva and Nabila Farah started off doubles play with a 6-0 win over the Hawks' Jahan Bayramova and Leticia Vieira.

Elizabeth Stephens and Zeina El Tawil followed suit with a 6-0 win against their opponents, Rutendo Gwaze and Mariel Bautista, as well to clinch the doubles point for the Broncos.

In singles play, Clarke dubbed Bayramova 6-0, 6-0 and then Cooke defeated Chelsea Smithback 6-1, 6-0 to snag two quick Santa Clara points.

Farah and El Tawil won their matches on Courts 4 and 5 against Julia Golub and Gwaze but Stephens fell to Bautista on Court 6. Silva rounded out the match with a win on Court 3.

"The girls played really well to start the season off on the right note," Cabell said. "We're only going to improve from here."

The Broncos travel to Stanford to face the Cardinal Monday at 1:30 p.m.
