Women’s Tennis Duo Earns Spot in Doubles Final

MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis will be represented in the doubles final at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational by junior Zeina El Tawil and freshman Caitlyn Frankel on Sunday. The duo won their semifinal match on Saturday to earn a trip to the final.

"Overall, it was good day," head coach Ben Cabell said. "We had some tough matches and were able to get some more valuable experience, which is what we're really looking for. I think Zeina (El Tawil) has had a real nice tournament. She played very well in singles and also made the final in doubles, which is great."

El Tawil and Frankel defeated Claire Bouquet (Cal Poly) and Sabrina Rodriguez (Pacific) in the doubles B semifinal, 8-4. The final on Sunday is set for 9 a.m. PT and will be against Kristina Breisacher and Isabella Von Ebbe (UC Davis).

"I think we're playing well in doubles," El Tawil said. "I'm excited (for the final), we're a new team and never played together before this so it's been good. I'm looking forward to it, it should be fun."

El Tawil competed in the singles A quarterfinal, but lost to No. 7 seed Jana McCord (St. Mary's), 6-0, 6-1. Junior Giannina Ong defeated Carolina Chernyetsky (Sacramento State), 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (7), in Saturday's consolation matches.

"I feel like I did play well although I had some ups and downs," El Tawil said. "Although the girl was pretty tough in quarterfinals, I ended the day on a good note so that was good. I was able to play another (unofficial) match afterwards and get a win."

Competition resumes at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
