SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis won four singles and two doubles matches at the Bronco Invitational on Sunday to end the fall season. Sophomore Madison Clarke and senior Daniella Silva were perfect on the day, winning both each of their matches at the Degheri Tennis Center.
"The third day is always tough because everybody is tired and sore, but all the girls stepped up and played well so that was good to see," head coach Ben Cabell said. "We did what we did what we needed to do in this final fall tournament."
In singles play, Silva defeated Gaelle Rey (San Jose State), 6-4, 6-2 and Clarke won, 6-1, 6-0, over Tamara Culibrk (San Jose State). Silva and Clarke then teamed up in doubles play to defeat Adriana Grgelyova and Sheila Morales (Nevada), 8-2.
"It was a really good day for both of them," Cabell said. "Especially Madison (Clarke), she was the overall winner of the competition and had a great tournament, going 6-0 (combined record of singles and doubles matches)."
Junior Zeina El Tawil defeated Milena Achlamov (Nevada), 7-6 (5), 6-1. Senior Nabila Farah defeated Miyo Kobayashi (San Jose State), 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Caitlyn Frankel and sophomore Elizabeth Stephens won their doubles match over Blaga Delic and Achlamov (Nevada), 8-7 (5).
"We have a better idea of who can do what as far as doubles is concerned," Cabell said. "I don't know if we've set a lineup yet but we have a better idea of what our strengths and weaknesses are going into the season. I also have to say that I've been impressed with our freshmen, Caitlyn (Frankel) and Caraline Patterson. They have done a good job of learning and growing into college tennis and they will be big assets for us this season."
Next time out for the Broncos will be on January 28, 2017 at 2 p.m. PT at Degheri Tennis Center against Sonoma State.
