SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis opens West Coast Conference play this weekend when it faces Portland on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT and Gonzaga on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.

The Broncos enter the weekend with a 4-5 record after picking up a 4-0 victory over Illinois State on March 15.

"We feel like we've set ourselves up well going into conference play," head coach Ben Cabell said. "We're feeling confident and that's great. Our goal is to make the conference tournament and we know we'll have to beat some good teams so this is a good start."

Sophomore Madison Clarke is 6-1 on court two this season and now 1-0 on court one after her victory last weekend. She has won eight of her last nine matches dating back to the fall and is 7-1 in dual match play. Senior Nabila Farah has also won five of her last eight matches dating back to the fall and is 4-3 on court three this season.

Senior Daniella Silva and Clarke are 5-2 on court one in doubles action this season. The Broncos mixed up their doubles lineup two weeks ago and have won the doubles point against Western Kentucky (March 11) and Illinois State.

"We're going to go up there and try to win at least one match but hopefully get two," Cabell said. "Playing on the road and playing indoors will be tough. Transitioning to that from playing outdoors here will be a challenge but the girls are ready and excited. This is what we train for and play for." 

The Portland Pilots are 3-6 on the year but 3-1 at home. They will host San Francisco on March 24 before facing the Broncos. Jelena Lukic is 1-1 on court one for the Pilots while Jelena Lazarevic is 5-1 on court two.

"I think these will be two close matches that could go either way," Cabell said.
